Meet Ruff: Ask Our AI Assistant Which Tool You Need

usertools.app now has an AI assistant on every page. Here's how to use Ruff to find the right tool, questions to try, what it won't do, and how your chat is handled.
usertools.app has 29 free tools, and you shouldn't need to know all their names to find the right one. That's why every page now has an AI assistant in the bottom corner: Ruff, the small red mascot. Describe what you're trying to do in your own words, and Ruff points you to the tool that does it, with a link straight to the page.
How to use it
- Open the chat. Click the mascot in the corner of any page. It opens as "Chat Support" with a short greeting.
- Agree to the notice. Before you type, the chat tells you the conversation is recorded and may be processed by AI, and asks you to agree. If you'd rather not, just close it. Every tool works the same without the chat.
- Ask in plain words. You don't need a tool's name. "I need to shorten my LinkedIn post" works better than guessing what a tool is called.
- Click the link card. When Ruff recommends a tool, it adds a card that takes you to that page.
Questions to try
A few examples of the kind of thing Ruff is good at, grouped by what you're working on:
- Writing: "How do I check if my text is easy to read?" or "Turn my meeting notes into bullet points."
- Social media: "Is my LinkedIn post under the limit?" or "Rewrite this announcement for Instagram."
- AI prompts: "My ChatGPT prompt is too long. How do I cut tokens?" or "Make this prompt clearer."
- Developers: "My JSON won't parse." or "What does this regex do?"
- Planning: "I need to write requirements for a new feature. Where do I start?"
- Time and money: "How many days until 1 March?" or "Add 20% VAT to this price."
It also answers questions about how the tools work, such as whether a tool stores what you paste. And it replies in the language you write in.
What Ruff won't do
- Wander off topic. Ask for a laptop recommendation and it will politely say that's not what this site is for, then point you back to the tools. That keeps answers focused and the free tools free.
- Pretend we have a tool we don't. If nothing here does exactly what you need, it says so and suggests the closest option.
- Replace a person for bugs. If something looks broken, Ruff explains how the tool is meant to behave and sends you to our contact form. It also tells you what to include (what you entered, what you expected and what you got) so we can fix it faster.
Tips for better answers
- Say what you're trying to achieve, not just the format. "I need to fit this into a tweet" tells Ruff more than "count characters".
- Mention the platform or file type if it matters, for example LinkedIn, Instagram, JSON or a PDF you copied from.
- Don't paste anything sensitive. The chat is recorded, so leave out passwords, API keys, personal data and confidential documents. The same goes for any online tool.
Help us decide what to build next
Every time Ruff has to say "we don't have that", it tells us something useful. One early example: people asked how to convert a specific date and time from one time zone to another, and we don't have a tool that does exactly that yet. Requests like that are what we look at when we decide which tool to build next, so asking for something we're missing genuinely helps.
Your privacy
The chat is provided by AtomicX. Conversations are recorded and may be processed by AI to generate answers, which is why the chat asks for your agreement before you start. Using the chat is optional, and the tools themselves don't depend on it. For how the rest of the site handles your data, see our Privacy Policy.
The story behind it
Ruff is an AtomicX chat agent, the same product AtomicX builds for company websites. We put it on usertools.app to use it ourselves and tested it with real visitor questions, including trying to make it go off topic. You can read what happened in 29 tools and one question: why we added AI chat to usertools.app.
FAQ
Is the chat free?
Yes. Like every tool on usertools.app, it's free to use and doesn't need an account.
Do I have to use the chat?
No. It's there to help you find things faster. You can browse the tools directly, and every tool works without it.
Can Ruff use a tool for me?
Ruff recommends the right tool, explains how it works and links you to it. You then use the tool on its own page.
What languages does it understand?
It replies in the language you write in. We've tested English and Spanish, and it's built to handle others.
